Google Voice
Well I have had my Google Voice account setup for all of an hour and a half and already I feel like this is something that should have happened long ago. As expected, Google Voice uses your contacts in your Gmail address book. So the people I talk with the most already have their phone numbers setup for Google Voice (from here on out to be known as GV because I am lazy!) to use for Caller ID purposes. So after a few quick settings checks, (Screen all unknown callers, Call presentation on, Display caller’s number) I had my wife call my GV number from her cell phone. My phone rang and showed my wife’s cell phone number without giving me any clue that it was coming from GV. Upon answering I was greated with information about who was calling and the option of pressing one to answer and then….I missed the rest because my wife was asking “is it just going to keep ringing?” So I pressed one and was connected without missing a beat. It sounded just like she was in the next room… no better than that… like she was in the same room! So yeah, after such a thorough test I am happy to say that first impressions are good. An official review will follow some time next week after having a chance to truly play around with it a while. Has anyone received their number yet?

I’ve had my GV account about a week now (I had signed up for a GC account long ago, so got in early), and I’m thrilled with it. It’s like having a phone number with a VIP. http://u.nu/4p4f Granular control over which contacts go to which phone(s) is really handy.
It keeps getting better. I just authorized my GV account with my Gizmo account… which I had previously setup with my Google Talk account. So in the end this means, you can call my GV number and it will ring my Google Talk account on my computer. So I can call and receive calls using my computer alone. This is looking very promising.
My first impressions aren’t that great. I can’t even get an invite. What’s up with that?
To be fair, you realize that there are thousands of people suddenly trying to get a phone number. When you DO get a number, I want to hear if your impression is any better. I’m also curious to hear any tips you may find on using the number as well.
Hopefully you are in the “elite” invited club by now. Any updates on your first impressions now?
