A Pirates Ransom for The Pirate Bay

It appears that The Pirate Bay has been purchased for $7.8 million by Swedish firm Global Gaming Factory X. They have stated they are going to work on a compensation plan for copyright owners and content operators. What does this mean to the world of open sharing? It just means that another method of sharing will have to spring forward to take the lead. This is where people will start making use of Opera Unite and the upcoming Google Wave. Not to mention the plethora of other peer-to-peer torrent sites around the Internet. Meanwhile, what will become of the founders of The Bay? If they are able to keep themselves out of prison I am sure we will see them undertaking another venture… or running for office. Story from The Business Insider

The New York Times reports that the Factory is planning on making it so that file sharing gets full approval of the content owners. While it would be a huge boon to the recipients, I personally have a hard time seeing it happen. Current Bay users also are expressing distrust in the outcome as promised. But as with everything else on the Internet, people will adapt to change.
