Google in 2010?
With all of the talk of the Nexus One out there, people have been asking me why I haven’t made any comments about it. Well to be honest, I am just not that impressed with it. Don’t get me wrong, I am sure the phone will be fun and nice and cute and cuddly, but it just doesn’t give me a “better than Droid” feeling. As a matter of fact, I really don’t believe the phone was designed to be better than all of the rest of the phones on the planet. First rule of Google, ignore the obvious and see what is behind the scenes. Google will (again this is all still rumor, but as close to fact as we have had so far) put out a phone they THEY will sell, and support. Meaning all of the thoughts of Android fragmenting and having problems should be tucked back on the burner. Google is making a physical commitment to Android.
Second, there will be an unlocked option (still catering to T-Mobile of course – don’t burn bridges) available for purchase eliminating the need to sign up for a two year agreement. So does this mean that they will still not have a VoIP phone? That they aren’t working on a true “iPhone killer” that everyone dreams about? Consider the fact that with each phone sold, be it Android or iPhone, more and more people are accessing the Internet via their cellular device. Google is working to make the Google Voice website on the iPhone as close to an app as possible without it actually needing to have approval. Meaning Google is still going to get their clicks in. The question really is “what technology will Google bring out to change the game?” VoIP is the given. That is going to be the next big deal with Google Voice. The best part about it will be that it wont require you to have an Android phone. So once again it will begin to bring out the “how do the carriers feel” questions. (First carrier to offer a data only plan wins.)
